POLICE AND THE MEDIA - Perth Press Club - 30th October 2008
Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan
talks to the Perth Press Club
The relationship between the news media, the courts and law enforcement agencies can sometimes be tenuous at best.
Obligations of secrecy, suppression orders, raids on news rooms, and the jailing of journalists who refuse to reveal their sources when directed to do so by a court are indicative of the pressures on the news media. The line of demarcation between the obligations of the judicial system and law enforcement agencies, on the one hand, and the traditions of a free media, on the other, appears to be a fine one.
The role of the media in impeding or assisting police in their investigations, police guidelines in dealing with the media, and the working relationship between WA Police and the Corruption and Crime Commission are among other issues that Dr O’Callaghan is expected to address.
